Diwali is celebrated as a festival of lights in India. It is celebrated as a major festival by Sikhs, Hindus, and Jain. The festival is usually celebrated for 4 to 5 days between mid-October and mid-November. Diwali is one of the most popular festivals in India which symbolizes knowledge over ignorance.

Why Diwali is celebrated?

Sikhs celebrate Diwali (also known as Bandi Chhor Divas) on the remembrance of the release of 52 kings by the sixth guru of Sikhs Guru Hargobind ji from the Gwalior fort prison by the Mughal emperor Jahangir. On the day of Diwali, Guru Hargobind arrived at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Hindus celebrate Diwali on the remembrance of the return of lord Rama, Sita ji, Lakshman, and Hanuman after an exile of 14 years. They reached Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. People celebrated the festival by lighting lamps and diyas.

Just like Christmas, Diwali is also celebrated as a big cultural tradition. People start planning in advance. They exchange gifts with their loved ones and wear new clothes. People decorate their houses with colourful lights and rangoli. People also believe that Lakshmi Ji blesses everyone on this day and people open the doors of their houses believing that the wealth will have continuous inflow.

What food is eaten on Diwali?

People generally greet others by saying “Happy Diwali”. In 2022, Diwali will be celebrated from 22nd October 2022 to 26th October 2022. Different cultures eat different food. Sikhs eat black chana and distribute mithai (sweets) like laddoos, barfis, etc. Many people celebrate by eating non-vegetarian food. 

What clothes are worn on Diwali?

Diwali is the major celebration of the year and everyone prefers to wear new clothes. People prefer to wear traditional clothes. Sikhs male wear kurta and pyjama. Sikh females wear designer suits and salwar. Hindu male wear kurta and pyjama. Hindu females wear a saree or suit salwar.

How you should celebrate the festival?

From last so long, people have been gifting sweets, utensils, decorative items, etc. Two days before Diwali, is celebrated as dhanteras, when people purchase gold, silver, utensils, or other household items. This tradition has continued for the last several years. People also burn crackers at night, which creates lots of air and noise pollution.

But have you ever thought of the real significance of the festival? The festival mark victory, so we should also aim at achieving victory even by doing small efforts.

It can be in the form of giving extra money to the maids or house cleaners. 

You can also buy goods from street-side vendors instead of big shops or stores. 

You can also feed the poor or destitute, who find it difficult to gather food for their families. 

You can gift new clothes to elderly people living in old age homes or children in old age homes.

Instead of burning crackers, you should light candles and also gift them to the laborers working near your home or the house cleaners.
