Who was Pope Benedict XVI?

Pope Benedict XVI was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from April 19, 2005, to February 28, 2013. Benedict was appointed as Pope after the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005. Benedict decided to be referred to by the name “pope emeritus” after his resignation and the title was maintained till his death in 2022. The full name of Pope Benedict was Joseph Aloysius Ratzinger

Pope Benedict was born on April 16, 1927, in Martl, Bavaria, Germany. He spent his childhood as well as adolescence in Traunstein. He defined himself to be Mozartian. He got his education from his home which helped him to prepare for difficult situations during the Nazi regime.
The siblings of Pope Benedict were Georg Ratzinger and Maria Ratzinger.
Benedict studied philosophy and theology in the higher school of Philosophy and Theology of Freising as well as the University of Munich. He obtained a doctorate degree in theology with the title “People and House of God in St Augustine’s Doctrine of the Church.”
He qualified for University teaching with a dissertation on “The Theology of History in St Bonaventure”. His intense scientific activities were in an important position at the service of the German bishops’ conference and the international theological Commission.
On 28 May 1977, he got Episcopal ordination. He was the first diocesan priest in 80 years to take on the best oral governance of the great Bavarian Archdiocese. Pope Paul VI made him a cardinal with the priestly title “Santa Maria Consolatrice al Tiburtino” on 28 June 1977.
On 25th November 1981, Pope John Paul II named Benedict as a prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of faith and President of the pontifical biblical Commission as well as of the international theological Commission.
Benedict resigned from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.
Benedict became the President of the preparatory commission for the catechism of the Catholic Church, which after 6 years of service presented the new catechism to the holy Father.
In 1999, Benedict was appointed as a special papal envoy to celebrate the XII centenary of the beginning of the Diocese of Paderborn, Germany.
He became an honorary academician of the pontifical academy of sciences on 13th November 2000.
Benedict received several Honoris Causa doctor aids in 1984, 1988, 1999, and 2000.
Pope Benedict died on 31st December 2022 in Monastero Mater Ecclesiae, Vatican City.
