What is call forwarding scam?

Call forwarding means when you forward the call coming to your phone on another phone. The objective of call forwarding is when your device is running out of battery or dead, and you have to receive an important call. When you forward the call to another device, the call received on your phone will automatically be received on another device to which you have redirected your call.

Call forwarding scam means when someone does the settings of call forwarding on your phone without your permission or you are not aware of the call forwarding settings. Call forwarding scam is basically done to steal money from your bank account. The OTP received on the phone can be instructed to receive in the form of a voice call. And to your surprise, you will get a message about the debit balance from your account.

Apart from this, the scammers also utilize the phone of victims as a relay for long-distance calls and the phone owner is not aware of the call forwarding activation service unless you detect something unusual in your phone bill.

Can your calls be forwarded without you knowing?

Yes, your call can be forwarded without you knowing. If your network operator provides an exotic setting through which they can inform you whether the calls are forwarded or not.

One of the ways is when an unknown person meets you at a public place and asks to make a phone call or send an SMS just because his or her phone is dead due to a battery down. At that time, that intruder can dial some numbers through your phone keypad and the call forwarding settings will be activated.

Why would someone use call forwarding?

Call forwarding is mainly done when you have an urgent call to receive on your phone and your phone is running out of battery. You fear that your phone will disconnect or get switched off during the call.

If your phone gets switched off and someone calls on your number then the call will be automatically redirected to another phone number that you have given to receive the call.

The objective of call forwarding is you do not miss out on an important phone call just because the battery is down.

How do I stop my phone from call forwarding?

For Android

1. Open phone dialing app

2. Select settings

3. Check for the option call forwarding or supplementary services

4. Disable call forwarding

For iPhone

1. Open the settings app

2. Click phone

3. Look for call forwarding, and switch it off

Conditional method to disable call forwarding

1. Open phone dialling app

2. Call ##004#. 

This is an internationally recognized number. When you will dial this, no one will answer it.

The phone will automatically be reset to default settings.

1. Keep an eye on your phone: whenever some stranger asks for your phone to make an urgent phone call or send an SMS then keep an eye on your phone. Do not take off the look even for a second. The scammers are likely to quickly dial the number for call forwarding and you will not be able to identify how you are losing money from your bank account.

2. Dial the number before handing it over: ask the other person about the number he/she wants to call. When the phone starts ringing only then give it to another person. Don’t allow them to type the number or keep a close look on your phone. Follow the same thing even when they want to send an SMS.
